UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING CLUB RECEIVES TOP RATING
In 1999, the University of Wyoming Campus Shorin-Ryu Karate & Kobudo Club was recognized as one of two top-rated JKI clubs. We feel this was quite an achievement, as Laramie islocated in one of the least populated regions of the United States.
Black Belt Magazine, November, 1999 Buzzline writes:
"W. Dan Hausel, Professor of Martial Arts at the University of Wyoming, was appointed Soke Shodai (grandmaster)/kudan (9th degree black belt) of Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate/Kobudo by the Zen Kokusai Soke Budo/Bugei Renmei commission at the Juko Kai International headquarters in North Carolina on September 26th, 1999. Soke Hausel was also recently honored in 1998 by induction into two hall of fames, honored as instructor of the year by two international associations, and highlighted in several Marquis, American Biographical Institute, and International Biographical Center Who's Who documents for accomplishments in martial arts, geological sciences, public speaking, writing and art."

UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING CAMPUS SHORIN-RYU KARATE & KOBUDO CLUB PLANS 30TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Thirty years ago, W. Dan Hausel (at that time a 3rd degree black belt)
initiated the University of Wyoming Campus Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo Club in 1977-78. The club was slow to start, but
grew to one of the largest and most productive University martial arts clubs in North America. Nearly 5000 students trained
at the club or took part in one of its many club-affiliated activities that included training women’s groups, EMT, ROTC
and Taekwondo black belts in self-defense as well as classes (beginning karate & jujutsu) offered through the University
of Wyoming Department of Physical Education (later the Department of Kinesiology) that became two of the more popular
classes on campus – both filling to capacity each semester, and classes offered through Extended Studies.
Club members have had opportunities to train in dozens of martial arts at various clinics located on campus, Casper, Saratoga
and elsewhere in the US. The club even brought two of best known martial artists in the world to Laramie – Dr. R. Sacharnoski
(world head of Juko Kai International) for a clinic in 1996 and movie star and stunt man Tadashi Yamashita in 2003.
Along the way, the club was recognized with many awards and was distinguished as the Juko Kai International’s top affiliated
martial arts school in the world in 1999. W. Dan Hausel, the club advisor, received many top honors as an instructor and
innovator during the 30 years and in 1999 was certified as Wyoming’s only Grandmaster, and in 2004, was awarded a 10th degree
black belt in Shorin-Ryu Karate (the highest rank attainable in karate). Hausel was inducted into 14 different Halls of Fame
and received many other national and international honors including 2004 Instructor of the Year, 2003 International Grandmaster
of the Year, 2002 Grandmaster of the Year & 2001 International Instructor of the Year, along with being a distinguished member
of Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the 21st Century, Men of Achievement, 1996 Man of the Year & 1997
International Man of the Year. Many of the club’s students also turned out to be very productive members of society and are
now scattered all over the world.
In January 2007, Hausel retired from UW and handed the reins over to Ben Froidevaux. Hausel moved to Arizona where he teaches
karate and works as a consulting geologist and is the world head of an international martial arts association.
In April, 2008, the University of Wyoming Campus Shorin-Ryu Karate Club celebrated its 30th year anniversary at Corbett Gym.
